Happy Earth Day from Tiny Green Chats! Today, and every day at TGC we celebrate the individuals and organizations working to protect our home: planet earth. 52 years ago, the first Earth Day mobilized 20 million Americans to call for increased environmental protections and since then has spurred global action to help promote transformative action for our planet.
Prior to the inaugural Earth Day of 1970, Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson was inspired by the student anti-war movements and hoped to harness its momentum to spread awareness of the deteriorating environment in the United States. With the help of Congressman Pete McCloskey, young activist Denis Hayes, and 83 other individuals across the nation, their movement grew from a university-based initiative to a nationwide movement and Earth Day was born.
Just 20 years later, Earth Day became recognized globally and 200 million people in 141 countries campaigned to bring environmental issues to the global stage. Today, Earth Day is recognized as the largest secular observance in the world and continues to inspire great positive environmental change.
Every day, it becomes more and more apparent that the climate crisis requires an urgent and widespread response. At TGC, we hope to educate our listeners on a variety of environmental justice topics and inspire changes to daily life that help support a healthier environment.
